What is sexual health?
This is a broad ranging term which refers to sexual problems in both men and women. This includes sexual dysfunction, reproductive diseases and problems in the genital tract (both sexes).
These are all dealt with by a sexual medicine specialist.
What is a sexual medicine specialist?
This is a trained medical professional who deals with a wide range of problems related to both the male and female reproductive systems.
What does a sexual medicine specialist do?
He or she will provide a range of services which involve testing and treating the following:
- Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) such as chlamydia and gonorrhoea.
- Sexually transmitted infections, e.g. genital herpes
- Syphilis
- HIV (plus counselling)
- AIDS (plus counselling)
- Erectile dysfunction (men)
- Vaginal dryness (women)
- Premature ejaculation (men)
- Pain during sexual intercourse
- Fertility problems
He or she will also advise about contraception as well as prescribe treatment for hepatitis B and C.
