What Repealing the US Healthcare Bill Really Means for Rural America-8340

It’s been a rocky ride for the United States’ history-making President Obama. From a storybook campaign and election to outright obstinacy in Congress, President Obama has held strong and has continued to push for reform in much of the American way of life, including the controversial healthcare reform.

Now, many of the achievements from the past few years are under scrutiny and may be completely repealed, beginning with America’s proposed socialized medicine. In a country where health insurance isn’t a requirement and isn’t always affordable, healthcare reform would seem to be a welcome change, but with certain right wing parties digging in their heels and opining that the reform would effect them negatively, the opportunity for change has been halted.

However, there are a few key benefits that the proposed healthcare law would provide that should not be ignored including aid for small businesses and children.

In rural America, a number of small businesses are increasingly looking to hire and offer health care to their employees. Repeal would prevent this from happening and health insurance would again be reserved as a benefit for the wealthy instead of a necessity for everyone, regardless of income.

The healthcare law means that children could no longer be refused coverage because of a pre-existing medical condition. Furthermore, insurance companies would no longer be able to cancel coverage without cause in case of illness. A threat to repeal this law is a threat to this senseless and harsh practice of abandoning individuals at inopportune times, when they are struggling with illness and left to worry about covering medical costs.

A repeal of the law would require rural families to pay out of pocket for immunizations and tests that would detect diabetes and cancer. As a result, many Americans would continue to forgo having regular tests performed, in turn skipping preventative care which often leads to more health problems and increased costs.

The healthcare repeal, in direct opposition to preconceived fallacies about it, is not meant to bankrupt the wealthy nor to penalize them for being so. Instead, it is meant to provide working class Americans with an opportunity for some of those unalienable rights spoken of in the American Declaration of Independence, of which healthcare is included.
