Jean Daguerre and her husband struggled to have a baby. As such, they did what many other couples do – get help in the shape of infertility treatment. Luckily for Jean, the therapy worked and she bore a baby boy.
Her joy was compounded when less than 12 months later she fell pregnant again; this time without the need for infertility treatment.
However, the joy was short lived as just 6 days afterwards the new mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Speaking with reporters, Jean said: “The first thought was, ‘What about the baby?’”
This gave rise to the worry that having chemotherapy would affect the growing child inside. Jean added: “I didn’t know that it was even possible to go through chemotherapy and be pregnant.” However, Jean finished her chemotherapy treatment last April followed by the birth of a daughter a couple of weeks later.
While the joy of defeating both cancer and giving birth to a new baby would be great news to anyone, in Jean Daguerre’s case, this joy was once more short lived. Unfortunately in September, her husband was killed in a car accident leaving a relatively young woman alone to bring up two very young babies. Jean said: “He just gets up from the couch and goes to the door, and the last words I said to him were, ‘Be careful.’”
Jean was originally from Britain, meeting her husband Hernan on a dating web site. The couple moved to the USA after the wedding.
