Well, not exactly, but it seems there is a new computer laptop that tracks your eyes and works out where you are looking on the screen.
Scientists demonstrating the new technology said the eye tracker works by shining 2 infra red lights at a person, while 2 cameras look for the reflection or ‘glint’ in the individual’s eyes. While the system needs to be calibrated for each person, it is interesting to note it works with people who wear spectacles as well as those who don’t.
The manufacturers, Swedish company Tobii Technology Inc told reporters: “In the future, a laptop like this could make the mouse cursor appear where you’re looking, or make a game character maintain eye contact with you.”
Barbara Barclay, general manager of Tobii’s Analysis Solutions business added: Rather than a replacement for the traditional mouse and keyboard or the newer touch screen, the eye-tracking could be a complement, making a computer faster and more efficient to use.”
The laptop itself is made by Lenovo Corp., who incorporated the Tobii system in a bump on the laptop cover. This causes the device to be twice the thickness of a normal laptop.
However, according to Ms Barclay: “…future, commercial versions can be slimmer and are perhaps two years away.”
Computer technology, particularly for the laptop has developed tremendously over the last few years, with many new ideas for their use. They are no longer used for writing documents, surfing the web or playing games, they have become communication devices.
Whether this new technology takes off, remains to be seen. It’s also not clear whether it will have any medical use.
