An American Democratic representative, Debbie Wasserman Schultz has vociferously attacked the new anti-abortion bill as “a violent attack on women.”
Ms Wasserman Schultz who hails from Florida says the bill goes further than just denying access to abortion it will redefine rape so that it any woman is attacked in this way will no longer be able to get an abortion.
In a recent interview she said: “It really is — to suggest that there is some kind of rape that would be okay to force a woman to carry the resulting pregnancy to term, and abandon the principle that has been long held, an exception that has been settled for 30 years, is to me a violent act against women in and of itself.”
While many people in the US support anti-abortion as a basic right for any woman, the pro-lifers believe that life means just that – life. So, irrespective of how the pregnancy occurred, including sexual attacks, all foetuses should be carried to term.
This would also apply to children it seems. The only exception is if a child has incest; for adults, incest will no longer be a crime.
Further, if the bill goes through, statutory rape will no longer exist as a crime.
Ms Wasserman Schultz is a leading light in the Democratic Party, and is the vice chairperson of the Democratic National Committee. She is known not to mince her words. So, the comments she has made over the abortion bill come as no surprise to those that know her.
During her interview she told the reporter: “Rape is when a woman is forced to have sex against her will, and that is whether she is conscious, unconscious, mentally stable, not mentally stable.”
She added: “Even though Republicans say they want government out of our lives, this is the most intrusive governmental act that we’ve probably seen to date in the personal lives of women.”
