Arguments over abortion in the USA do not seem to weakening. If anything they are probably set to get worse in the coming year.
That said a judge in the USA state of Georgia came firmly down on the side of the pro-abortion lobby in a recent pronouncement.
A law that prohibited abortions in the state was challenged by women’s groups. The ban was to take effect from the 1st January 2013 but this was lifted when the Fulton County Superior Court Judge Doris Downs decided to suspend the new law.
Pro-choice groups have hailed the ruling as a victory, even though the law itself is not as draconian as some other laws passed by a number of US states over the last couple of years.
In some states there have been attempts to ban abortions even in cases where women have been raped or where their life is in danger. The Georgian ban would have made such cases exceptions although mental health would not be included in this provision.
It isn’t known whether a challenge to the suspension will occur, but given the almost violent nature of the pro versus anti debate over abortion, a challenge is almost a given.
