Recent research has found that antioxidants may play a crucial role in helping male infertility.
It is well known that antioxidants are helping to prolong life, so it is interesting to note it might just help in creating life.
Infertility has a number of causes, some being environmental, but one cause – oxidation – is believed to account for about 30% to 80% of all cases. So, using antioxidant supplements (so the theory goes) could help reverse the problem.
Antioxidants are substances which reverse or stop the effects of oxidation in the body. Oxidation itself is caused by free radicals which are released when the cells of the body use oxygen. These free radicals are byproducts and are well known to be involved in a number of disorders including diabetes, cancer, heart disease, macular degeneration and now it seems infertility.
The infertility study involved 2876 couples who are experiencing fertility problems. During the 34 trials, half the men were given a placebo while the other half were given an antioxidant supplement.
The results found a statistical difference in terms of the number of live births.
Today, many people have become too reliant on taking pharmaceutical medicines to help their medical problems. It is therefore very timely that this particular research seemingly supports the use of supplements that help restore people’s bodies affected by the modern way of life.
However, relying on supplements is also not considered to be beneficial in the long run. As usual proper diet rich in antioxidants is more important. Eating plenty of different coloured foods, that is fruit and vegetables are the major source of antioxidants.
For those who want to take supplements, you should consider products rich in vitamins A, E and C. Lycopene and lignan products are also beneficial. Lycopene is found naturally in tomatoes whereas lignan is found in sesame seeds.
