Lea Michele admits that she “grew up in a community where what I looked like wasn’t considered beautiful” and says her self confidence has been affected by this, not believing people when they said she was beautiful.
On first sight, Glee is in the same vein as films like High School the Musical with popular, beautiful high school students spontaneously bursting into note perfect songs throughout their school life without becoming socially out-casted. Glee looks at dance, drama and singing groups in a more real life light and makes the real life people in these groups beautiful because of who they are, rather than what they look like.
The 24 year old Glee star has admitted she had once considered having plastic surgery she was so self critical about her looks but says that Glee “proves it doesn’t matter what you look like, that you’re beautiful and that beauty is on the inside.” She’s thankful for a real confidence boost she’s taken from the show and states she no longer cares about her weight or her looks.
One area Michele says she does disagree with the writing of Glee is in the jokes on her character’s boob size! “Rachel (Michele’s character) does not have the smallest boobs in the club, although that would not be a problem if she did, but they keep saying that she does and I’m like, ‘it’s not true!’” as much as she doesn’t like the boob talk of the writers she has thanked them for their writing saying she has a “great butt”. Which is always a bonus.
