Becoming pregnant is one of the joys of life. However it has recently been found that some women are having difficulty getting travel insurance. This is a very serious issue in many ways, not least the cost that might have to be paid for treatment.
If living and travelling in the UK, this is not currently an issue, simply because the NHS will pick up the tab irrespective of where you are at the time; unless of course your intention is to go private. However this is not the same abroad.
So, what’s the answer? The following ideas and tips should help.
As with any medical condition, and pregnancy is no different, it is vital that medical insurance is taken out. That said not all insurance companies will insure a pregnant woman. The company may also class the pregnancy as a pre-existing condition. If it does, then they are unlikely to reimburse if the pregnancy becomes problematic.
Before taking out a plan, make sure that all relevant questions are answered fully and accurately. This is common sense really, and applies to anyone travelling. If they are not answered correctly, the insurance is automatically invalid.
Get as many quotes as possible. Pregnant women who travel are often classified as high risk. Even more so, if you are someone who travels regularly. No insurance company wants to pay out for any care (they consider unnecessary), if a baby is born outside of the home country. This is particularly so if the baby or woman develops post natal difficulties.
While getting travel insurance may be difficult for a pregnant woman, it isn’t impossible. Just ensure that whatever insurance cover is taken up will be adequate. If you are unsure, then it may be wiser not to travel till after the baby is born.
