Q1. What is autism?
A1. Autism is a lifelong developmental disability which affects a person’s ability to comprehend and interact with the world around them. They have problems with social interaction, imagination and communication and often become isolated as a result.
Autism is actually a spectrum disorder which means that people with this disorder experience the same problems but to varying extents.
They are affected in different ways, for example they may have a high level of intelligence and an exceptional skill in a particular area but have difficulties with speech and non-verbal communication.
Basically, this is a spectrum in which there are people with a mild form of autism at one end through to people with a severe form of autism at the other. These people have severe learning difficulties and require specialist 24 hour care.
People with mild autism can often live a normal life but others will require some form of help and assistance.
Examples of autistic spectrum disorders include classic autism, Asperger’s Syndrome and Pervasive Development Disorder.
