What are the risks of CLE/RLE?
This is a safe procedure but you need to be aware of the fact that like all forms of surgery it comes with risks. These will be discussed with you by your surgeon.
Possible risks include:
- Glaucoma
- Damage to the structure of the eye
- Corneal decomposition
- Retinal problems/complications
- Rejection (of the synthetic lens)
- Cystoid macular oedema
- Posterior vitreous detachment
Some patients with very severe forms of myopia have eyesight which is progressively getting worse or they have detached retinas. In these cases, CLE/RLE cannot prevent or stop these conditions.
If you have a very severe form of short-sightedness then you are at increased risk of retinal detachment. Your surgeon will mention this along with other risks so that you are fully aware before you make any decision regarding surgery.
