A8. No. Most people can use alli but they need to have a BMI of 28 or more and are prepared to change to a healthier lifestyle.

There are certain groups of people who must seek medical advice before taking alli. They include:

  • People taking prescribed medication for high blood pressure
  • People taking prescribed medication for high cholesterol
  • People with a medical condition such as diabetes

If you are a taking oral contraceptives then mention that you are thinking of taking alli to your GP or pharmacist. Alli can inhibit the action of oral contraceptives so you may need to use an additional method.

You are advised against taking alli if you:

  • Under 18
  • Have problems with food absorption
  • Allergic to Orlistat
  • Pregnant
  • Breastfeeding
  • Taking ciclosporin
  • Taking an anti-clotting medicine such as Warfarin
  • Have cholestasis
