Nicotine replacement therapy - Stopping Smoking Treatmenents
This is designed to prevent or reduce those unpleasant cravings which are symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.
Nicotine is one of many toxins present in cigarette smoke which enters your bloodstream and causes a whole range of effects, the main one being nicotine addiction. Nicotine stimulates the mind and body and quickly leads to addiction which is why it is so difficult to give up.
This is the main obstacle when trying to quit smoking. Many smokers find this an extremely difficult addiction to break which accounts for several failed attempts.
The answer is to ingest nicotine but without smoking which is where nicotine replacement therapy comes in. This treatment includes nicotine patches, such as Nicorette, gum, tablets, sprays and lozenges. There are also inhalers which look like cigarettes but without the harmful side effects.
These are available on prescription or as over the counter products. They do have side effects and these vary between individual products.
Review of controlled trials testing Nicotine replacement therapy showed that smokers using were twice as likely to quit smoking at than those in the placebo trials.
