Tattoos and Pregnancy
For many people, tattoos are symbols of identity, beliefs and lifestyle, with historical and cultural meanings. Or tattoos may simply be decorative. For women, tattoos can also represent fertility and expressions of sexuality. Many women choose to have tattoos and regardless of the reason, may experience changes in their existing tattoos when pregnant. Their concerns may touch on how to maintain the tattoo as the skin changes and stretches. They may consider re-inking the tattoo and question the safety of doing so while pregnant.
Some women start thinking about having a first tattoo after conceiving and wonder about the health implications on the unborn baby. Considerations need to be given to both the expectant mother and the developing foetus before deciding to proceed with re-inking an existing tattoo or getting a new tattoo.
