Differences in midwife care

Midwives have always adhered to a specific set of checks for pregnancy starting from every four weeks between twelve and twenty-eight weeks, then every two weeks between the thirty sixth week and birth. This meant that women used to be seen in excess of twelve times for check-ups if their pregnancy term appeared normal. However, the Government introduced a ten check cycle for first births and a seven check cycle for second pregnancies that are without complication.

If pregnancy complications are present, the number of checkups and treatment by the physician, specialist and/or midwife will depend on the type of complication and the health condition of the carrying mother. If you are concerned about your level of care during pregnancy, you can raise any questions with the NHS Direct or speak with your doctor for better understanding.
