Choice motivations for having another baby
Motivations for having or not having another baby include family size, age, the couple's relationship growth, health and financial reasons.
Many women find that after they have given birth to their first bundle of joy, they then start considering having another as company for their first child. Some women choose to have a second child within a year or less for this reason. Other women give birth to their first child at an older age and realise that time is running out for their family planning, so they opt to have a second child as soon as possible.
Sometimes the choice of family size is decided early on in a couple's partnership, and having a second child is part of the family size planning. Couples may feel that for their marriage to develop they need more time with each other and a second child may affect the growth of their relationship so they defer a second pregnancy. Financial or health reasons are sometimes a concern why couples may put off having their second child, and some may opt to raise only one child.
When thinking about motivations for having another baby, some of the questions you can ask yourself include:
- What is causing me to want to give birth to another baby?
- How does my partner feel about having a second child?
- Is my relationship with my partner stable enough for a second pregnancy?
- How will having a second child impact my life?
- Am I healthy enough to have a second child?
- Can I afford to have another child?
Answering these questions and discussing them with your partner can help you decide whether having a second child or not is right for you and your family.
