  • Darkening of the areola –The area surrounding your nipples, known as the areola, may darken on the onset of conception
  • Tender breasts – Your breasts may become sensitive and tender during pregnancy
  • Prominent blue veins on the breasts – You may see dark veins on your breasts during pregnancy due to the increased blood supply
  • Colostrum is the first milk the baby drinks when it is born. It is a yellow form of milk that is normally of a thick consistency
  • Prominent nipples – Your nipples may stick out due to a growth in size
  • Montgomery’s tubercles – the small glands on the areolas – may become bumpy

Ways to deal with changes to your breasts

There are many ways you can deal with the changes that are occurring to your breasts. Some pregnant women find it useful to wear breast pads in their bra if fluid is leaking. Many embrace the enlargement of their breasts during pregnancy; however, some women see it as a burden especially if they already have large sized breasts. Buying a supportive pregnancy bra can help you to deal with your new found curves.

A good bra can aid in providing the support you need for your growing body. There are bra specialists who can assist you in choosing the ideal bra.

Your pregnancy hormones are preparing your breasts for lactation and often the breasts can become sensitive and tender. The milk ducts in the breasts are enlarging to supply the milk for when your baby is born. Your breasts may in turn feel heavier. Some pregnant women feel that they are most sensitive around the nipple area.

The supply of first milk, called colostrum, is given to your baby when you being breastfeeding. The second trimester of pregnancy will see the production of colostrum and there is the possibility of leakage. You can wear breast pads in such cases to prevent marks.
