Going on a long car journey
Long car journeys can be a nightmare with young children; they have little patience and are often keen to get out of the car; a few minutes can seem like hours for children and they can get bored and frustrated very easily.
To make your journey a bit more tolerable, try to stop for breaks frequently to let your child stretch their legs and distract them from the journey. Make sure they get plenty of fluids so that they don’t get dehydrated and take plenty of snacks for the journey.
When you get back in the car, try to keep them amused by playing games, listening to their music and giving them toys to play with. If they are getting tired, you can try to encourage them to sleep by putting some soothing music on and giving them their favourite soft toy or blanket to cuddle.
Toilet stops can be a bit of a problem on long car journeys and you may find that your child announces that they are desperate for the toilet when you’re twenty miles away from a service station; this situation can’t really be helped and you should simply find somewhere safe to stop and pull over. You can try to eliminate this problem by stopping at services regularly and encouraging your child to go to the loo while you’re there.
