Q8. Does marijuana cause psychosis?

A8. There are arguments put forward which claim that long term use of marijuana can lead to psychosis.

Someone who has a family history of psychosis or is considered to be mentally 'vulnerable'may be at risk but this is inconclusive. There are other factors which have to be taken into account.

There is not enough evidence to show a link between long term use of marijuana and psychosis.

If someone has schizophrenia and uses marijuana then this can aggravate their condition, but, it is by no means a given. It can cause a relapse but there is only a small risk of it doing so.

Is there a link between marijuana and schizophrenia? More evidence is needed to prove or disprove this.
