Who is suitable for Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis?
This technique is widely used in some countries whereas others restrict its use.
Initially, it was meant to be used by couples who had embryos that were likely to develop a genetic disorder. But technology has advanced as well as research into this technique which has led to an increased usage.
The availability of PGD varies between clinics so check to see if your clinic offers this technique. However, many clinics will have a set of guidelines regarding suitable candidates for PGD. These include:
- Women who have experienced several miscarriages
- Couples with family histories of genetic disorders
- Women aged 38 or older who are undergoing IVF
- Couples who have undergone 3 unsuccessful IVF cycles
- Male partners with a low sperm count that ICSI is necessary
