Does being overweight affect your fertility?
Yes. Research has shown that there is a link between excessive weight gain and fertility problems. One such example is that of polycystic ovarian syndrome which causes irregular periods and excessive hormone production (oestrogen and androgens). This affects ovulation which then leads to infertility.
Other problems include increased risk of miscarriage and a decreased chance of success from fertility treatment.
Excess weight can prevent the proper absorption of some fertility drugs which will affect their chances of working.
If you are overweight or obese then your clinic will advise you about weight management which will form part of an overall healthy lifestyle plan.
