Does a blocked fallopian tube mean that I am permanently infertile?
Not necessarily although this very much depends upon what caused the blockage in the first place. If the tube has become blocked as a result of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) then this usually results in infertility, unless it is caught at an early stage.
Infertility caused by blocked fallopian tubes is called ‘tubal factor infertility’.
But IVF treatment can help women with blocked fallopian tubes. It works by extracting eggs from the ovaries which are then fertilised in a laboratory before being transferred back into the uterus. This bypasses any problems with the fallopian tubes.
