What can go wrong with ovulation?
One of the most common factors in infertility is ovulation problems. Ovulation and the associated hormonal changes are responsible for your menstrual cycle and this normally runs smoothly but things can go wrong.
The timing of your ovulation is important when you are trying to conceive as this tells you when you are at your most fertile which means you are most likely to become pregnant.
Problems with ovulation include:
- Irregular periods
- Anovulation
- Polycystic ovarian syndrome (POS)
- Ovarian cancer
- Hormonal problems: for example excessive production of prolactin or thyroxine.
- Premature menopause
- Chronic medical conditions such as diabetes, kidney failure and cancer
- Being overweight or underweight
- Endurance sports and other forms of excessive exercise
