What are the causes of infertility in women?
Female infertility accounts for around 40% of infertility cases. The reasons for this are varied and include:
- Polycystic ovarian syndrome (POS)
- Age
- Hostile cervical mucus
- Blockage in the fallopian tubes
- Damaged fallopian tubes
- Endometriosis
- Fibroids
- Hormone disorders
- Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)
There are a small number of cases in which there is obvious cause of infertility. These are known as ‘unexplained infertility’.
Reasons for female infertility are often categorised as hormonal, congenital, infectious and functional.
