A27. Dehydration is a condition which develops when there is an excessive amount of fluid loss. This fluid is lost during food poisoning as a result of vomiting and/or diarrhoea.

It causes an imbalance in mineral levels in the body. These minerals include sodium and potassium and are essential for the everyday functioning of the body.

The extent of the dehydration depends upon the amount of fluid that has been lost.
