Varifocal lenses
Varifocal lenses are a suitable type of contact lens if you have presbyopia. They are also a good choice of lens for anyone with short sightedness (myopia) or long sightedness (hypermetropia).
The concept behind these lenses is that they enable you to see objects at different distances which mean no more reading glasses or having to change your lenses/glasses before driving.
They work in exactly the same way as varifocal glasses but are easier and convenient.
How do varifocal lenses work?
These lenses contain more than one form of corrective power which is merged across the lens. This is designed in two ways in which the corrective power changes in a progressive manner.
These are:
- Concentric
- Aspheric
Concentric is where there is a distance prescription in the centre of the lens with alternating circles of close and distance powers. Two of these alternate rings are near to the pupil of your eye.
Aspheric designed lens are where the close and distance prescriptions are in front of the pupil of the eye.
These lenses are available as a soft contact lens or a gas permeable lens.
