Q9. Why do older people get high blood pressure?

A9 . The main reason for this is that very often, people’s lifestyles catch up with them by middle age. This manifests itself in a hardening of the arteries - which is due to high cholesterol levels, weight gain and high blood pressure.

Someone who smokes, drinks to excess, does not take any exercise and is overweight is at risk of developing high blood pressure by their forties. Plus there is the fact that our bodies start to show the signs of wear and tear by middle age which can include a hardening of the arteries. These become stiffer and less elastic due to age and the effects of one’s lifestyle. This does not mean that every older person will get high blood pressure just that they are at an increased risk of doing so.
