Treating PWS
There is no fix for Prader-Willi syndrome but there are treatments which can be used to promote development, ease symptoms and try to encourage independence. The care plan for individuals with PWs involves a multi-faceted approach, which is provided by a team of different specialists, including physiotherapists, dieticians, speech and language therapists and occupational health therapists, as well as doctors and nurses; as a general rule treatment is most successful when it involves:
- Effective management of eating and calorie intake
- Encouraging exercise and physical activity (which are tailored to improving muscle strength, balance and coordination)
- Promoting good all-round health by encouraging healthy eating, good sleep patterns and frequent moderate exercise
- Effective management of behavioural problems
