Reducing the risk of mental retardation
It is impossible to prevent birth defects and genetic conditions that may contribute to mental retardation, but there are some steps you can follow during pregnancy to reduce the risks; these include:
- Stop smoking when you find out that your are pregnant
- Stop drinking alcohol when you find out that you are pregnant
- Do not take illegal drugs
- Try to eat a healthy diet and exercise on a regular basis; this will boost your immune system and make you more resistant to infections and illnesses
- Get plenty of rest and drink lots of water
- Take folic acid supplements
