Mental Retardation
What is mental retardation?
Nowadays, mental retardation is more commonly known as intellectual incapacity, developmental delay or intellectual disability. The term mental retardation is used to describe a condition which makes learning difficult and can result in slow development and growth. Mental retardation affects some people more severely than others. Experts tend to classify degrees of mental retardation in accordance with intelligence levels, which are determined by IQ testing; the average IQ is 100, an IQ of over 120 is said to denote that a person is gifted, while an IQ below 80 indicates a degree of mental retardation. As a general guide an IQ of 70-79 means the person is borderline retarded, an IQ of 55-69 is classed as mild, 40-54 means moderate, 25-39 denotes severe retardation and under 25 means profound retardation.
