Diagnosing learning disabilities
Learning disabilities may be diagnosed in various different ways; some people undergo diagnostic tests, while others are assessed by specialists; many children are born with problems or syndromes which cause them to have learning disabilities from birth but many children aren’t diagnosed with learning difficulties until they go to school. The diagnostic tests can seem to go on for a long time and this may frustrate parents, but it is important that the tests are done thoroughly and the correct diagnosis is reached. For many adults, a learning disability may have been dismissed as a lack of intelligence or laziness during their school years; diagnostic tests and assessments can be used to explore the reasons behind poor performance or difficulties with activities such as reading or writing.
