QUININE SULPHATE
Use: Night cramps, Malaria
This medicine is mainly indicated for reducing the occurrence of nocturnal leg cramps. It is also used to treat falciparum malaria.
Cautions:
- atrial fibrillation
- heart block/conduction defects
- pregnancy
- G6P deficiency
Contra-indications:
- haemoglobinuria
- myasthenia gravis
- optic neuritis
Side effects:
- cinchonism (tinnitus, headache, nausea, diarrhoea, blurred vision, deafness, vertigo)
- hypersensitivity
- blood disorders
- kidney failure
- hypoglycaemia
- heart arrythmias
Quinine is very toxic in overdose.
