What is Cockayne syndrome?

Cockayne syndrome, like xeroderma pigmentosum, is another disease where DNA cannot be repaired properly. Signs and symptoms include growth failure, problems with the nervous system, and sensitivity to light. There can also be problems with the eyes, hearing, or any other parts of the body.

There are three types:

  • Type 1 – the abnormalities start in the first 2 years of life, and death occurs in the second decade of life
  • Type 2 – usually fatal in the first decade of life
  • Type 3 – has a later onset than types 1 and 2 and is milder

There is a fourth type when a person affected with Cockayne syndrome also has xeroderma pigmentosum. Signs and symptoms of both diseases are present.
