What are the signs and symptoms of a pet allergy?
The signs and symptoms of a pet allergy come on when you are exposed to the animal you are allergic to. They can occur very quickly, often within a few seconds or a few minutes.
Asthma-like symptoms include coughing, wheezing, having difficulty breathing (because your airways are tightened). Signs and symptoms of allergic rhinitis include a blocked nose, a runny nose, or sneezing. You might also cough up large amounts of sputum. Symptoms can keep you awake at night and prevent you from getting a good night's sleep and rest, this can lead to exhaustion. Depending on the extent of your symptoms, an allergy like this can either be a nuisance or can prevent you from spending valuable time with your pets or animals. Allergens (chemicals that cause allergies) can be deposited on carpets, bedsheets, towels, or clothing, and this can cause symptoms even when your pet isn't around.
