What are leukotriene antagonists? - Allergy treatments
Leukotrienes are inflammatory chemicals. They can cause airways to become narrower and clogged up with mucus, they can also increase mucus production. They are important in asthma. Leukotriene antagonists include montelukast and zafirlukast, and are important in the management of asthma. They are less effective than corticosteroids, but have fewer side effects and are suitable for children to use.
Side effects can include headaches, abdominal pain, and thirst. Other side effects, such as diarrhoea, dry mouth, muscle and bone pain, or mood changes, are very rare
