What questions should I ask my nose reshaping surgeon at the consultation?

As there are many questions to ask it can be easy to forget what might turn out to be the most important question of all.

So, it is a good idea to write down all the questions you need and take these along to your consultation. Then, tick or cross off each one in turn.

In order to help you with this we have compiled a list of useful questions to ask your surgeon:

  • Do you perform other procedures as well as rhinoplasty?
  • How many years have you spent doing this procedure?
  • Do you perform many rhinoplasties and if so, how many?
  • What are your success rates?
  • Are you a member of BAPRAS, BAAPS or The British Association of Cosmetic Surgeons? Are you registered on the GMC’s Specialist Register of Plastic Surgeon?
  • What can go wrong with this procedure and how likely is that to happen?
  • Is there anything in my medical history which might prevent me from having a rhinoplasty? If so, can you suggest an alternative?
  • Can I have other procedures with rhinoplasty?
  • What can I expect from this procedure?
  • What are the risks of this procedure?
  • If something goes wrong then who do I contact?
  • Do you provide aftercare and if so, how long for?
  • What does your quote include?
  • What does your quote exclude?
  • What will my nose look like?
  • Will I be able to breathe more easily after my procedure?
  • What preparations should I make before my surgery?
  • How long will my recovery take?
  • What can’t be achieved with rhinoplasty?
  • Is rhinoplasty painful? What medication will you give me?
  • How long do the results last for? Will I need further surgery?
  • Will I be treated in a private hospital or a clinic?
  • Do you have any ‘before’ and ‘after’ photographs I can look at?
  • Do you have any testimonials or case studies I can read?

Make sure you are not pressurised into making a decision. If the clinic and/or surgeon are pushy and are more concerned with this and getting you to sign up for other procedures, walk away and find another.

You want to be sure that your surgeon will treat you in a friendly and professional manner. Ideally, you want someone who you instinctively like and trust.

This is someone you are placing your trust and your life in and you need to be certain that he or she is the best person for the job. If you feel that your surgeon is being evasive or unwilling to answer your questions then look for another.

If you don’t feel relaxed or comfortable with him or her then, again, choose another surgeon.
