Q3. What causes gum disease?
A3. Gum disease develops as a result of a build up of plaque on the teeth. This sticky bacterial substance coats the teeth but can be removed by a tooth brush.
But if it is left then the risk is that it starts to infect the gums as well which leads to the characteristic red, swollen appearance which we associate with gum disease. These gums bleed when the teeth are brushed. This is why dentists stress the importance of brushing the teeth at least twice a day and using dental floss 3 times a week. An antiseptic mouthwash can also help.
A daily oral hygiene routine combined with an annual (or twice yearly) appointment with a dentist will help to reduce the risk of gum disease.
