Dermatology : Specialists
What is dermatology?
Dermatology is the study of the skin and areas related to it such as the sweat glands, hair etc. There is more than one type of dermatology which includes immunodermatology (skin problems caused by a ‘faulty’immune system); cosmetic dermatology which looks at aesthetic skin disorders and paediatric dermatology which studies skin disorders in children.
What is a dermatologist?
This is a highly trained professional who diagnoses and treats all manner of skin disorders.
What does a dermatologist do?
He or she will carry out investigations into a variety of skin complaints which include:
- Acne
- Skin rashes
- Skin cancer
- Skin allergies
- Moles (and their removal)
- Dry skin
- Lupus
Dermatologists use a variety of techniques to treat a whole range of skin disorders which include botulinum toxin, micrographic surgery, dermal fillers, laser surgery and sclerotherapy.
They may also advise patients to make changes to their diet, lifestyle and skin care. This can mean using special creams or oils to moisturise dry skin or covering up a ‘port wine’stain on the face.
A dermatologist undergoes a long period of training in what is a complex area. The skin is the largest organ in the body and subject to a wide variety of complaints so a specialist in this field requires a great deal of expertise and experience.
